How it works

Every unit in a category has a fixed relationship to one base unit, such as the metre for length or the kilogram for weight. The calculator converts your value to the base unit and then to the unit you want. Temperature is different, because the scales do not start at the same zero, so it uses its own formulas.

Formulas

  • Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9 ÷ 5 + 32
  • Celsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) × 5 ÷ 9
  • Kelvin = Celsius + 273.15
  • For other units: value × (from factor ÷ to factor), using the base unit of the category.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a tola?

One tola is 11.664 grams. You can also use our Gold Tola Calculator to convert masha and ratti and to value gold.

Why is there a US gallon and a UK gallon?

They are different sizes. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon is about 4.546 litres. Check which one your source uses.

Why can temperature be negative but other values cannot?

Celsius and Fahrenheit have negative values below their zero points. Other units here measure amounts, so the converter asks for zero or more. Temperature below absolute zero (-273.15 °C) is not possible and shows an error.

Are the results exact?

The conversion factors are the standard definitions, and results are rounded for display. For work that needs official precision, use the relevant standard or ask your institution.
